US blocks UN resolution condemning Israel

New York- The United States blocked a resolution condemning Israeli artillery attacks on the Gaza Strip in a vote Saturday at the United Nations Security Council in New York. The US ambassador to the UN, John Bolton, rejected the Qatar- sponsored resolution at a special sitting of the UN body.
Ten of 15 members of the council voted in favour of the resolution, while four abstained.
A "no" vote by one of the five permanent members of the Security Council - the US, China, Russia, Britain and France - is enough to quash a resolution.
Bolton accused the text of being one-sided because it did not mention Palestinian terrorist attacks.
Qatar put forward the resolution after an Israeli attack Wednesday on a home in the town of Beit Hanoun killed 18 Palestinians, mostly members of the same family.
