    Is This Possible?

A two term limit was set on the presidency after FDR was elected to four straight terms as president. Seeing as how the republicans control almost everything in the government now, is it possible for them to change the two term limit to a no term limit so that GW might be able to stay in office for longer than his two terms?

Amendment XXII - Presidential term limits. Ratified 2/27/1951.

    1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President, when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

    2. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years from the date of its submission to the States by the Congress.

The only exception to this whole scheme is when a person assumes the Presidency after the half-way mark in a term. The President would have served out one term, could be elected to a second term, and is still eligible for one more full term.

Former U.S. president Bill Clinton has recently voiced his opinion in favor of modifications to the 22nd Amendment. According to Mr. Clinton, former presidents and vice presidents who have already served two terms should be allowed to run for the office again, after some interim period has passed. He reasoned the country may wish to trust leadership onto an already tried and proven candidate in times of great need.

The Bill Clinton reference is the only thing I can find that even indicates changing that Amendment...

That doesn't mean the Republicans can't introduce something in the future.

Also, if we are still at war, or there is another terrorist attack, etc... there's no telling what kind of bills they could pass.

Hold on a sec. Look at the 18th amendment (the no-booze one)....

It was officially ratified on Jan. 16, 1919. It was repealed 14 years later. I guess as long as the legislature of 3/4 of the states see fit to repeal the 22nd amendment, a 28th amendment can be added repealing the 22nd.

Folks, as you well know, there are a whole bunch of red states.... and a Republican majority in Congress..... and threats of bad Arab men killing us all every couple weeks. Watch out for 2007. Pay close attention to peculiar market trading and foreign-nation warnings. I know I will.

Well, if he doesn't figure something out soon, this will be a moot point.
