MOSCOW. Feb 17 (Interfax) - The Russian Interior Ministry should be purged of corrupt officials, President Vladimir Putin said at the ministry's expanded session on Friday.

"There is a need to firmly and uncompromisingly clean up [the Interior Ministry] of bribe-takers, people who have turned their professional duties into a lucrative business," he said.

"An effective civilian system is needed to control the functioning of law enforcement agencies, particularly with regard to the observance of citizens' constitutional rights and legal interests," Putin said.

"Measures to prevent extremism and crime in general are impossible without support from the population and civil society institutes," the president said.
