London, Dec. 10 – The United Nations Security Council joined the international community in condemning on Friday recent remarks by Iran’s hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who denied the Holocaust took place and suggested that Israel be moved from the Middle East to Europe.

Reading a statement to the press, UNSC President Emyr Jones Parry said that the top international security body fully backed UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in his response to the Ahmadinejad’s comments. Members of the UNSC “condemn the remarks about Israel and the denial of the Holocaust attributed to Dr Mahmoud Ahmadinejad”, Parry said.

Annan said on Thursday that he was “shocked” by the remarks. “The Secretary-General recalls that only last month the General Assembly passed a resolution which ‘rejects any denial of the Holocaust as an historical event, either in full or in part’”, Annan’s spokesman said in a statement.

He urged all member states to combat such denial, and to educate their populations about the well established historical facts of the Holocaust, in which one third of the Jewish people were murdered, along with countless members of other minorities.

In October, Ahmadinejad told a gathering of Islamist students in Tehran that Israel must be “wiped off the map” and threatened Muslim nations that normalise their ties with the Jewish state. His comments drew outrage across the world and were condemned by the UN Security Council.
