Top official says Gov. Spitzer to resign

ALBANY, N.Y. -- A top state official said Governor Eliot Spitzer is resigning after being linked to a prostitution ring.

The official said Spitzer will resign effective Monday and will be replaced by Lieutenant Governor David Paterson.

State Republicans had been threatening to impeach Spitzer if he didn't step down.

The scandal erupted Monday when a law enforcement official identified Spitzer as "Client 9" in an alleged prostitution ring. "Client 9" paid thousands of dollars to spend an evening with a call girl named Kristen in a Washington hotel.

Spitzer's involvement in the ring was reportedly caught on a federal wiretap as part of an investigation opened in recent months.
