I know on the surface this essay of Giuliani's seems like an innocuous development, but I am concerned about the propaganda power of the Weekly Standard's recently coined phrase, "The 9/11 Generation." It was immediately picked up by the neocon media and proliferated. Michelle Malkin used it, CBS News used it, Newsday did too.
Clearly, this is the new "Global War on Terror." They are transforming a war that has no specific enemy, that was started on false pretenses, and that has no end, into a form of Just War, a noble pursuit that defines American youth. The idea behind the 9/11 Generation is not only that the bogus War on Terror will be a generational conflict, but also that those who fought in what the neocons will call "the 9/11 Wars" will later become important statesmen.
Giuliani, in his piece for Foreign Affairs, begins with one of those lines Goebbels could have written, for its generic but expansive propagandistic force: "We are all members of the 9/11 generation." Note how the neocon shaping of our reality will become our reality if this slogan gets him elected.
