Several major cities will be seeing extra security, as armed officers with dogs have been sent to protect mass transit sites over the July Fourth holiday.

A spokeswoman says special Transportation Security Administration teams have been sent to guard facilities in Washington, Baltimore, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Houston, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The spokeswoman says the teams are designed "to provide a visible deterrent along with local police."

She says the teams have regularly been sent out since the 9-11 terrorist attacks where large crowds are expected.
