WIRE SERVICES - A percussion bomb and clashes rocked the tense southeastern Iranian city of Zahedan, two days after a car bomb killed 11 elite Revolutionary Guards, the official IRNA news agency said.

Militants set off a percussion bomb, which did not cause casualties or damage, at 10:00 pm (1830 GMT) and then opened fire on the police before being chased, IRNA said.

"The armed militants, in their new crime, exploded a percussion bomb and dispersed," governor Hassan Ali Nouri said.

"The police have surrounded the area and are chasing, identifying and arresting the militants," the official added.

"The agents of the world arrogance were unhappy with today's massive and unique presence of people in the funeral of the victims of the Zahedan terrorist act and became worried," he said.

IRNA quoted its reporter as saying shooting between militants and security forces broke out a short while after the explosion, on a main road close to a residential complex. All its exit and entrance points were blocked.

The electricity in the residential complex was cut following the explosion and the clashes, the agency said, without giving a reason. It was not clear if all the suspected militants were arrested.

It has a substantial Baluch community, a minority Sunni Muslim group.

According to unconfirmed website reports, Wednesday's attack was claimed by a shadowy Sunni militant group, Jundallah, which has been blamed for a string of armed incidents in the volatile province.

Provincial police commander Brigadier General Mohammad Ghafari said a total of 65 suspects had been detained over the Zahedan attack, including three who were believed to have actually carried it out.

He renewed Iranian accusations that Jundullah was receiving support from British and US forces in neighboring Afghanistan for its campaign of violence in Sistan-Baluchestan.
