    A senior official says the United States President will use a major speech next week to reveal a controversial plan to send more American troops to Iraq.

    The official told the BBC the extra troops are likely to focus on providing security rather than on training Iraqi forces.

    The move comes with figures from Iraqi ministries suggesting that deaths among civilians are at record highs.

    The US president arrived back in Washington on Monday after a week-long holiday at his ranch in Texas.

    The senior administration source said the speech setting out changes in Mr Bush's Iraq policy is likely to come in the middle of next week. Its central theme will be sacrifice and involve increasing troop numbers.

    The need to find some way of pacifying Iraq has been underlined by statistics revealed by various ministries in the Iraqi government, suggesting that well over 1,000 civilians a month are dying.

    Doing the math:

    As near as I can tell the number of civilian deaths each month in Iraq is most likely somewhere between 12 and 24 thousand.

    Indeed, "well over 1,000 civilians a month are dying."

    What's 655,000 divided by the amount of days between our invasion, and the date that number was reported?

    You asked for the following computation, Jon:

    655,000 / 1219 = 537 civilian deaths per day in Iraq

    (The crap below is just a bunch of details that you can probably skip over for now.)

    http://www.timeanddate.com/date/duration.html

    From and including: Saturday, March 1, 2003

    To and including: Saturday, July 1, 2006

    It is 1219 days from the start date to the end date, end date included

    (note: I get the same answer of 1219 days when performing this computation using mathematica.)

    Or 3 years, 4 months, 1 day including the end date

    Alternative time units

    1219 days can be converted to one of these units:

    * 105,321,600 seconds

    * 1,755,360 minutes

    * 29,256 hours

    * 174 weeks (rounded down)
    _______________________________________

    The mean of the statistical analysis performed by the Johns Hopkins group gave 601,027 deaths between those dates:

    601,027 / 1219 = 493 civilian deaths per day in Iraq

    The range of 426,369 to 793,663 deaths is most likely the usual range of one standard deviation (one sigma) of the statistical analysis performed by the Johns Hopkins group.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_deviation

    This computes to a range of roughly 350 to 651 civilian deaths per day in Iraq.

    That means there is the equivalent of a 9/11 attack every 5.5 days.

    A 9/11 roughly each week for 174 weeks straight for the Iraqi people.

    Yeah, it is quite disturbing. (*heavy sigh*)
