I'm just going to be devil's advocate for a minute:

The UAE is not an organization, its a country. And frankly its the most liberal of the arab nations (women can participate in life: drive, wear t-shirts, etc). It is not run by Islamic fundamentalists , the quality of life is very high, and there is a great deal of foreign investment. - the people are not oppressed, Dubai is a very modern and technolically advanced city, and it would hardly be considered a breeding ground for fundamentalists.

In other words, although money may be laundered through a bank in dubai, its a bit of a leap to conclude that the UAE is a 9/11 co-conspirator. Banks all over the world are involved, knowingly and unknowingly, in money laundering operations.

This being said, I also wouldn't agree with putting a foreign company in charge of US Ports.

Of course, we are also outsourcing our democracy to private companies like Diebold, so why would this surprise anyone?

One of the "understandings" we have on the board is that when you speak about a country, you're speaking about the Government of that country. The people who make the decisions for the country. By me saying UAE, it doesn't mean every single person of the UAE... it just means the powers of the UAE that allow money laundering that funds terrorism to take place. The people of the UAE connected to some of the alleged hijackers...

And I know you will come back to say, "What is the United States? An organization or a country?"

Uber... the problems with this have to do with how we're outsourcing the oversite of our U.S. ports to a country other than the United States. Why not give it to an American company (other than Halliburton)? Why choose a country with supposed ties to terrorism financing? A country with supposed ties to 2 of the alleged hijackers? It's a slap in the face to the American people. To me, it's no different than putting Osama Bin Laden in charge of airport security for the U.S.

Granted, this doesn't mean we shouldn't do business with the people of the UAE. It means we should stop the terrorist financing, and bring those ties to the alleged hijackers to justice.

I think it was Kerry or Alan Colmes who said that there are a lot of people who regret voting for Bush in 04.
