MOSCOW - The United States and its Western allies have told Iran that an answer is needed by July 5 on whether Tehran will take part in nuclear talks.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Thursday that G-8 countries expect a concrete response from Tehran to a proposal on solving the crisis surrounding Iran’s nuclear program.

Lavrov also said that the EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and Iran’s top nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, will meet on July 5.

The six major nations involved in negotiating with Tehran, meanwhile, will assess the situation on Iran’s disputed nuclear program by mid-July, Lavrov said.
