Hundreds of children are slaves in UK, say charities

Children, some only six years old, are arriving in the UK in their hundreds each year to work illegally in cannabis factories and sweatshops around the country, according to a report by a coalition of leading charities. They come from as far afield as Africa, Asia and eastern Europe, trafficked by organised crime gangs in what is described by child campaigners as a "cruel and shocking exploitation of children".

Many are taken with the naïve blessing of parents who pay up to £3,000 in the hope that their children will have a better life than they can provide back home, reports The Sunday Telegraph.

The problem is claimed to be growing out of control and now a coalition of charities, including Unicef, NSPCC and Save the Children, are calling for urgent action by the Government.

The charities have produced a report for the Home Office that outlines the true extent of the crisis and contains their recommendations on what needs to be done to address it. The document states how there is no provision for the child victims. It accuses the Government of having failed to address the problem to date and often treating victims like suspects - focussing on how they came to be in the country.


Christine Beddoe, the director of End Child Prostitution, Pornography and Trafficking, called the practice "modern child slavery".

Charities want more resources to tackle the problem and say that a national strategy is needed. Chief among their demands is for Britain to ratify the European Convention against Trafficking in Human Beings. This would mean that children would be allowed to stay in the UK and recover, rather than simply being shipped back from where they were sent.

this is due to the immigration policy. pretty much the same thing is repeated throughout the western world.

I don't think it has anything to do with immigration policy. Britain has some of teh toughest anti-immigration laws in Europe. These children (and women sex slaves too it should be noted) do not come over on the boat and get off at Dover. They are smuggled illegally into the country by criminal gangs who use them as slaves. Immigration laws or not, this will happen regardless.

Of course, it makes economic sense. Why pay British or other immigrants (Irish, Europeans, Indians, Pakistanis etc) minimum wage (never mind Trade Union rates) when you can 'employ' slaves. And that is the nature of the capitalist system - the race for profits, which can only come from increased exploitation of the workforce.

it's more or less like what's going on in the US where murderers, rapists, terrorists, the uneducated, etc. get first dibs.

Erm, from right wing racists/fascists like the British National Party / National Front / White Nationalist Party / Combat 18 / Veritas and the far-right of the Tory Party. Because they are the only people I ever hear use terms like that.

I lived in London for a while (literally I moved back to Ireland a week before 911) and I loved it. I had friends (most of them English born oppspring of first or 2nd generation immigrants) that were african, asian, muslim, hindu, rastafarian, christian, atheist, hippy. All sorts. Not to mention white english, scottish and welsh. It was great. Of course, I too was an immigrant! I'm from Ireland - and there's loads of Irish in Britain. Course in the 70s, 80s and 90s the same people baiting muslims used to do it to us - 'they're all in the IRA', 'never trust a Paddy', 'fucking drunken terrorist mick pricks' - hell I experienced some of myself in my three years in the UK. So you'll forgive me if I have a lot of sympathy with 'the new Irish' in the UK. In fact, the parallels are striking in some respects - except dark skinned people are much easier to pick out of a crowd than the Irish ever were.
