Zionism wasn't a particularly religious movement until more recently. The main elements of the Zionist Movement were 'Labor-Zionists' (Ben Gurion and his ilk), who used the 'god gave Israel to the jews' line more oppurtunistically than anything else. They were essentially secularists who wanted to create an ethnically Jewish state (at the expense of the native Palestinian population).
