"I pledge allegiance, to the Flag, of the United States of America, and to the Republic, for which it stands: one Nation, under God, indivisible, With Liberty and Justice for all."
They meant: "Today kids, we are learning about the USA. This is the Pledge of Alliegance of the USA. Aren't Americans kooky with they're ultranationalistic zeal?"
It meant, I'm an American, America's great, all hail America. You stick up for America, you attack anyone who doesn't like America, and you hide America's downfalls (which there aren't any but just in case). That was as a kid, of course.
