NEW ORLEANS — The U.S. agency leading Hurricane Katrina rescue efforts said Tuesday that it does not want the news media to photograph the dead as they are recovered.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, heavily criticized for its slow response to the devastation caused by the hurricane, rejected journalists' requests to accompany rescue boats searching for storm victims.

An agency spokeswoman said space was needed on the rescue boats.

"We have requested that no photographs of the deceased be made by the media," the spokeswoman said in an e-mail.

Kind of reminds me of how the government doesn't want any photos of the war dead. We don't want people to believe that good old fashioned war and natural disasters at the hands of a bumbling dictator can lead to death do we?

They just want to sanitize everything. I mean, jesus... look back at 9/11... do you think we saw 5% of what happened that day? After that day? No way in hell...

Thats why they don't want to have any sort of investigation right now, we'll do that later after everything has been sanitized and people have forgotten what really happened.

Not to mention Iraq or Palestine, where we only see a fraction.

I've got a feeling the media is not going to go along with this one. I think they know there is going to be an attempt to cover up just how bad their (FEMA) screwup was.

They seem to be on the ball... the reporters reporting from there anyway.

don't get your hopes up. they're hardballing it now but in a few weeks it's going to be puffball questions again.

I don't think so, the media have been getting more bold lately, even before this hurricane came along. I think they have finally crossed the line and aren't going to turn back. I think they know for sure now that Bush has to be stopped.

No one wants what you say to be true MORE than me, but PKP might be right, and I'm just going on their "record". They have to prove themselves. BIG TIME

Well, I can't think of a better opportunity for them to do so.

And some of them have. Anderson Cooper, Tim Russert, Shepard Smith, Geraldo Rivera, Keith Olbermann to name a few... but they have to remain persistent, and NOT bow down to their superiors when the truth is at stake. You know what I think is going on personally... I think the networks don't have the BALLS to stand up to them during this crisis. They would have walk outs galore if they did. I could be wrong, but I think that's why they've been let off the leash as it were.

Care to eat these yet, Betl?
