Thousands rally over Gaza settlement closures

By foreign affairs editor Peter Cave

Tens of thousands of people have flooded into Jerusalem for a prayer rally at the city's Western Wall to protest against the removal of Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank.

It is the first in a series of mass demonstrations leading up to the forced closure of settlements in Gaza next week.

There was high security and there were huge traffic jams as worshippers flooded into the old city, but the rally was religious rather than overtly political and police say there was no unusual incidents.

The politics are expected to be played out tomorrow in Tel Aviv when an even larger demonstration is planned in the city's Rabin Square and police say they are worried about clashes between settlers and Muslim worshippers around the Temple Mount area in Jerusalem over the weekend.
