9/11 Timeline Update - Day of 9/11, Hijackers, the Saudi Connection - Additions as of March 16, 2008

There is a ton of new material about the Day of 9/11. There are more entries about the shootdown order (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a950wantsclarification#a950wantsc larification), which could have been issued around 9:38 a.m. (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a938clarkeshootdown#a938clarkesho otdown), about 9:50 a.m. (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a945shootdownorder#a945shootdowno rder), after 10:00 a.m. (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a1000bushrumsfeld#a1000bushrumsfe ld), or about 10:18 a.m. (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a1018shootdownauthority#a1018shoo tdownauthority) Regarding military exercises, some NEADS staff were still unsure whether the day's military exercises had ended at 10:00 a.m. (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a1006neadsuncertain#a1006neadsunc ertain), fighters from Otis were recalled from a training mission at about 9:03 a.m. (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a903fightersrecalled#a903fighters recalled) and other jets on training were sent home at about 9:35 a.m. (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a935sendjetshome#a935sendjetshome ) There were communication problems at NORAD and NEADS (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a912noradcommunications#a912norad communications), which requested help from another air defence section around 10:00 (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a958neadscallswads#a958neadscalls wads), and also for the three pilots scrambled from Langley (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a945confusedcommunications#a945co nfusedcommunications).

Regarding Flight 93, the Regional Operations Center was notified of the hijack at 9:40 a.m. (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a940clevelandgreatlakes#a940cleve landgreatlakes), a business jet (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a1007businessjetasked#a1007busine ssjetasked) was asked to help locate the crash site, and a local farmer flew over the site, taking pictures (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a1050cessnaflies#a1050cessnaflies ). President Bush learned of the attack on the Pentagon shortly after it happened (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a938bushlearns#a938bushlearns) and requested security for his family (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a944familysecurity#a944familysecu rity). Otherwise, the fighters from Otis left their holding pattern at 9:13 a.m. (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a913otisheads#a913otisheads), Richard Clarke learned of a plane approaching the White House at 9:37 a.m. (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a937clarkelearns#a937clarkelearns ), and a pilot from Langley AFB surveyed the Pentagon just after it was hit (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a945eckmanninspects#a945eckmannin spects). The FAA and military still would not say if jets were launched in the evening (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a600militarywontsay#a600militaryw ontsay), but the CIA's Near East Division figured out bin Laden was behind the attacks when the second plane hit the WTC (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a903ciablames#a903ciablames).

There are also numerous new entries about the 9/11 hijackers, of whom much video footage remains unreleased (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a0208videoclassified#a0208videocl assified). There is considerable confusion over the Flight 93 hijackers' arrival at Newark before the attacks--Ziad Jarrah seems to have arrived on three different flights on the same day (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a090701floridanewark#a090701flori danewark)--Marwan Alshehhi was considered a deserter (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a040100alshehhideserter#a040100al shehhideserter) from the UAE army in April 2000, and Saeed Algahmdi was inconveniently seen in the US (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a061101saeeddeluxe#a061101saeedde luxe) before he officially arrived. The hijackers were seen with an unidentified Middle Eastern male (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a090801penndl#a090801penndl) just before the attacks and the FBI failed to help a security guard identity the hijackers (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=aafternoongillfbi#aafternoongillf bi) at Dulles airport. Mohamed Atta's car (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a022101attaqueried#a022101attaque ried) was queried by police, a warrant for his arrest was issued (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a060401attawarrant#a060401attawar rant), but Florida police failed to notice it (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a080301attacarqueried#a080301atta carqueried). Nawaf Alhazmi's rental car was checked by police in New Jersey (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a082801alhazmiqueried#a082801alha zmiqueried), but an FBI agent looking for him failed to find entries about him in databases (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a090501fullerncic#a090501fullernc ic) and failed to search a private database (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a090401choicepoint#a090401choicep oint) for information about him.

There is more material about the "Saudi Connection." Nawaf Alhazmi and Khalid Almihdhar allegedly told a US associate they wanted to crash a plane into a building (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=aearly2000earlywarning#aearly2000 earlywarning), but Alhazmi correctly suspected that Omar al-Bayoumi, who was seen with Hani Hanjour (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=aearly00hanjourbayoumi#aearly00ha njourbayoumi) and in whose apartment the hijackers allegedly stayed (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a011500bayoumiapartment#a011500ba youmiapartment), was a Saudi spy (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a2000alhazmibayoumi#a2000alhazmib ayoumi). In addition, phone calls suggest a link between the hijackers, al-Bayoumi and an al-Qaeda linked imam (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a020400bayoumiaulaqi#a020400bayou miaulaqi), one of the hijackers contacts was deported from the US in 2003 (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a050603thumairydeported#a050603th umairydeported), and the Saudis don't want to extradite al-Bayoumi or anyone else (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a073003saudivowbayoumi#a073003sau divowbayoumi).

Regarding the 9/11 Commission, the White House had a better relationship with Democrat Lee Hamilton (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a0303whitehousehamilton#a0303whit ehousehamilton) than his Republican counterpart Tom Kean, who was shocked by the lack of information in Presidential Daily Briefings (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=aearly1203keanpdbs#aearly1203kean pdbs), whereas fellow commissioner Jamie Gorelick was shocked by the specificity of warnings (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=aearly1203gorelickpdbs#aearly1203 gorelickpdbs) they contained.

Miscellaneous entries include a visit by British intelligence officials to the US on September 12, 2001 (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a091201britishvisit#a091201britis hvisit), tacit US support for the cancellation of elections in Algeria (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a01192ussupportalgeria#a01192ussu pportalgeria), and a visit by Taliban leaders to the US (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a0799talibanvisit#a0799talibanvis it). In addition, an al-Qaeda explosives trainer visited Kosovo in 1998 (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a0398marzoukkosovo#a0398marzoukko sovo), a US solider from the Bosnian war emerged as an al-Qaeda leader in Somalia (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a0208mansoorsomalia#a0208mansoors omalia), and KSM (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a070899ksmsharjah#a070899ksmsharj ah) allegedly stayed in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, in 1999. What's more, Richard Clarke thought the US's Achilles heel was in the US itself (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a040200clarkeopinions#a040200clar keopinions), bin Laden's main money-handler came to the attention of Canadian intelligence in 1997 (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a0297pachafound#a0297pachafound), and the US lost a Central Asian base in 2005 (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a112105usleavesk2#a112105usleaves k2). Finally, hundreds of millions of dollars passed through bin Laden charity fronts (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a1979600million#a1979600million) during the Soviet-Afghan War, and if you're wondering where the moderates are in Afghanistan, they're all dead - the US-backed mujaheddin killed them (http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a1980smoderateskilled#a1980smoder ateskilled).

Thanks, Kevin (and Jon).

My initial thoughts:

1. "the CIA's Near East Division figured out bin Laden was behind the attacks"

"was behind" = concluded or declared? ... the way it is now seems a bit leading for the reader ... do we really know where OBL fits into the events of 9/11?

2. I totally agree with what you said at the end, but I wonder if there is perhaps a more appropriate NPV-like way of saying it...( ).

But seriously, I can appreciate the emotional frustration one must encounter when compiling all this information.

..."if you're wondering"... ( ) ... it really is a beautiful piece of sarcasm.
