Al-Qaeda smuggles missiles into Saudi

by Joel Bowman on Monday, 03 December 2007

Suspected Al-Qaeda terrorists successfully smuggled eight Chinese-made missiles into Saudi Arabia before being arrested as part of last week's crackdown on militants in the kingdom, a Saudi newspaper reported on Sunday.

Unnamed security sources said the militants were planning to use the missiles to allegedly target hotels and other buildings, quoted Arabic daily Okaz. The newspaper said the recovered missiles were already inside the kingdom when they were discovered, but did not give any further details.

Saudi Arabia said on Wednesday it had arrested 208 militants involved in terror cells planning imminent attacks on targets such as oil facilities and places frequented by Westerners.

State television, citing an Interior Ministry statement, said 18 of those arrested belonged to a cell led by an "expert in launching missiles" who had slipped into the country. The report said they planned to smuggle eight missiles into the kingdom.
