WASHINGTON, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President George W. Bush warned on Thursday countries like Syria not to interfere in the upcoming election in Lebanon.

"I am deeply concerned about foreign interference in the election. The message has been sent to nations such as Syria that they should not interfere," Bush said when he met with Saad Hariri, son of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri who was murdered in a car bombing.

A top U.S. military commander will go to Lebanon to asses the needs of Lebanese security forces, Bush said.

Lebanon's parliament on Tuesday adjourned for four weeks a crucial session to elect a new president for lack of a quorum and to allow more time for MPs to reach agreement on a consensus candidate.

The United States has voiced strong support for the Lebanese government headed by Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, and has accused Syria of meddling in the internal affairs of Lebanon, a charge denied by Syria.
