Lebanon Warns against US Military Aid to Israel

Beirut, Jul 30 (Prensa Latina) The Lebanese government warned on Monday that the US decision to step up military assistance to Israel ignores the premises for peace in the Middle East.

Increasing Israel"s military budget implies backing up its logics of military superiority and boosting its capacity to attack Lebanon and the Arab world, according to an official communiqué.

Before leaving for Egypt, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice ratified that his country had agreed to supply weapons to Israel and other countries of the region, including Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

According to the plan, Israel"s military budget will increase 30 billion dollars for the next ten years, starting in 2008, when Tel Aviv will start receiving three billion dollars a year, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said.

He added that US President George W. Bush told him in June 2006 that his country would continue to enjoy its military advantage over its neighboring Arab nations.

Israel received 12.4 billion dollars in US military assistance last year, according to press reports, which recalled that it is the only Middle East country that holds nuclear weapons, estimated at 200 warheads.
