The remains of an executive who worked on the 92nd floor of 1 World Trade Center were identified yesterday, bringing new hope to families of his colleagues whose bodies are still considered "missing."

Edward Ryan, 42, was a first vice president of Carr Futures when the terrorists struck on Sept. 11, killing him and 68 of his co-workers among the 2,750 who perished.

Ryan's remains were not found until last October - long after the official search ended in February 2005 - when a Con Edison crew stumbled upon bones in an abandoned manhole.

Since then, the city has expanded the search for remains to the construction road surrounding the manhole and other areas. Hundreds more bones and bone fragments have been discovered.

Ryan's identification through DNA could signal a new possibility of closure for the families of the 13 other Carr Futures employees whose remains have never been identified.

They are among the more than 1,100 who died that morning whose families do not have identified remains.

Yesterday, Ryan's family agreed to let the Office of Chief Medical Examiner release his name but declined to comment further.

Ryan, of Scarsdale, Westchester County, was at work in the north tower when hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into floors 94 to 98.

Investigators now believe workers on floors 92 and 93 were trapped by debris that clogged the stairwells. Many workers from floor 91 and down were able to escape before the building collapsed.
