New York officials have identified another September 11 victim from testing remains with new DNA technology.

Nine new victims whose remains were recovered after the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centre had been positively identified in the past two months, the city medical examiner's office said.

Office spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said the city had contacted family members of the latest identified victim on Wednesday. The victim's name was not disclosed.

The victims recently identified include a New York firefighter, an Australian on the plane that crashed into the north tower and a woman who was working in the north tower on floors near the point of the crash.

The Australian was Alberto Dominguez, 66, a Qantas baggage handler from Sydney who was on holidays.

He was a passenger on American Airlines Flight 11 when it was hijacked by the terrorists.

Technology that created stronger DNA profiles from bone fragments had helped identify the victims and hundreds of bone fragments of previously identified victims, the medical examiner's office said.

A search of the World Trade Centre site has recovered new remains nearly every day since last October.

More than 1100 of the 2749 victims who died in New York City have never been identified from remains.
