Pakistan is a strong, dedicated ally, says US Navy admiral

Washington, Feb 9 (ANI): US vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Edmund P Giambastiani has said that Pakistan had proven itself to be a "dedicated" ally of the US since the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

He acknowledged Pakistan's help in the US-led Afghan war. "Pakistan was right there after US and coalition forces began major combat operations in Afghanistan with substantial assistance to the US," The News quoted Admiral Giambastiani as saying on his return from overseas trip, including stops in Pakistan, Iraq and Afghanistan.

"They are good and strong partner in the war on terrorism," he added.

Giambastiani further said that the Pakistani armed forces had demonstrated their intent in the war on terror by deploying soldiers to federally administered tribal areas in the western part of the country for the first time in the nation's 60-year history of independence to fight against al-Qaeda and Taliban forces.

"Pakistan has been single most successful ally in capturing or killing al-Qaeda in the global war on terrorism," he said and added: "As always, any relationship can get better, and our relationship with Pakistan improves on a day-to-day basis, ... and everyone should remember that."

He further said that military-to-military talks between nations and coalition forces are essential to build relationships as allies.
