Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany was elected the 265th pontiff today by the College of Cardinals. He was announced as tens of thousands of people cheered in St. Peter's Square. Ratzinger has chosen the name Benedict XVI, the Vatican announced. The announcement came shortly after white smoke rose from the Vatican chimney and bells rang to announce that a new pope had been selected.

Well its about time. Where would we all be without a pope.

Believe it or not, it was rather quick. I was thinking we wouldn't know at least until Thursday or Friday.

But fuck 'em anyways.:fuckyou:

supposedly the choice is divinely inspired (so they aren't really voting) ...

but I'm surprised at the choice none the less.

Well, I heard the first vote went to Bush, so they decided to throw out the electronic voting machines and do it the old fashioned way.

ha ha ha ha ...

didn't you know - Bush is God's chosen vessel for the American people. Bush and God have a personal relationship. The problems with the electronic voting machines were divine in origin.

Of course they have a personal relationship. Why wouldn't the president have daily conversations with God??? Makes him a better dictator --I mean leader.

In his defense...

"The Hitler Youth was organized into an adult leadership corps, and the general membership comprised of boys ages fourteen to eighteen. After 1938, the Hitler Youth was a compulsory organization, mandatory for all young German men. The group was also seen as a recruiting ground for several Nazi Party paramilitary groups, with the Schutzstaffel (the SS) taking the most interest in the Hitler Youth."

Supposedly, but not really. Politics are involved. The new Pope had to garner the votes needed...so in theory, "God" Had nothing to do with, just who could sway the 2/3rd's their way.

Y'know, it hasn't quite sunk in yet that we have a new Pope. For as long as I can remember, JPII's been Pope so it's still weird to me that it's not him.

*sings* Sometimes you wanna go...where every Cardinal knows your na-a-ame...

Oh, that was Ratzenberger. Never mind. :-P
(Y'know Cliff from Cheers...?)

of course ...

And even if God was sending a sign of some form ... the cardinals still have free will. Meaning they can vote as humans and not as vessels of God.

I've heard him described as a transitional Pope... meaning when they find someone younger, or he dies, they'll replace him...
