NYC searches for more remains at WTC

Renewed effort comes amid outrage over latest Ground Zero find

(GD HST: This whole idea of new searches for victims reeks of Republicans trying to bring 9/11 back into the American psyche to further their agenda of frightening the public. I'm not saying to forget 9/11; I'm saying it's wrong to use 9/11 as a political tool)

NEW YORK - Workers removed material from several manholes at the World Trade Center site Saturday as the city began a new search for the remains of Sept. 11 victims, two days after the surprise discovery of dozens of bones at ground zero.
The unexpected recovery of new remains in a manhole this week — four years after active searching for the dead ended — prompted the city to promise a more thorough search of ground zero.

Utility and city officials on Saturday hand-removed material from manholes on a service road on the site’s western edge. It will later be screened by forensic officials for small fragments of bone or tissue, said deputy mayor Edward Skyler.

Upset relatives of some Sept. 11 victims called for a federally led new search for remains in and around ground zero after construction workers discovered bones in one manhole excavated as part of work on a transit hub, officials said.

The 80 bones and fragments found Thursday ranged from a little less than an inch to 12 inches long, said Ellen Borakove, spokeswoman for the city medical examiner’s office. The bones possibly include ribs, arms, legs and vertebra, she said.

The work earlier this week on the service road is part of more extensive construction of a 1,776-foot skyscraper, transit hub and memorial on the 16-acre site. The active search for the dead ended at the site in 2002 after a massive cleanup of 1.5 million tons of debris.

More than 40 percent of the 2,749 Sept. 11 victims in New York have never been identified.
