CHICAGO The Chicago Tribune says one of its foreign correspondents has been arrested in Sudan on charges of espionage.

Forty-four-year-old Paul Salopek (SAL'-oh-pek) is a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter who was on assignment in Darfur for the National Geographic. The magazine says he was there to "fairly and accurately report on the region."

The Tribune says it's worried about Salopek's safety and is appealing to the government of Sudan to release him.

He, his driver and his interpreter were arrested two weeks ago. They were charged today with espionage, passing information illegally and writing what Sudan calls "false news."
