BRITAIN is set to swelter in the highest ever temperature.

Weathermen say the mercury could hit 102F (39C) tomorrow in the south-east of England.

And Scotland isn't far behind with a scorching 90F (32C) across the Central Belt.

A spokesman for the Met Office said last night: "It is very, very hot in central Scotland and it's going to get hotter.

"Temperatures have hit 89F in Aberdeenshire but tomorrow will be hotter.

"It will be 30 or 31 degrees -which is 89F - in Glasgow and Edinburgh. And by Wednesday it looks like it will hit 90F (32C).

"It's up to 12 degrees hotter than the average for Scotland at this time of year."

The spokesman added: "The weather looks like it's going to hold.

"It will get a bit cooler on Thursday and Friday when there will be a risk of thunder. But temperatures will still be as high as 75F (23C) by the weekend."

The highest July record in Britain was 97F (36C) at Epsom, Surrey, on July 22, 1911.

And if the mercury hits 102F tomorrow, it will beat the existing highest-ever UK temperature of 101F (38.5C) recorded at Faversham, in Kent, on August 10, 2003.
